Thoughts on yesterday’s match between the US (0-22-1) at Mexico was, in my opinion, a perfect opportunity to rope in some casual soccer fans - too bad none of them were watching (or even knew about) the 4pm game only aired on mun2 (what?) and Telemundo.
First, it had the story you heard about, if you heard about it at all – the US has never won a game in Mexico, and after going up early with an Charlie Davis beaut, it looked like we could feasibly come out ahead. Even better was the few exciting opportunities we had in that first half where it looked like we could go up on Mexico, even after they tied the game (on a legitimate beat on our defense).

And then, as is our wont, the US came out a different team in the second half; lackluster, tired, bored, distracted, and ceding everything to Mexico, who took the momentum in the last 45 to score a late in the game garbage goal. US almost could have, but did not deserve to, win the game, and their second half performance proved we have a long way to go to playing on the World Stage where we’re not wanted.

However – the game was exciting to watch, with lots of back and forth, very thick tension, plenty of goal opportunities, and the chance to see inspired physical play. There was even a fight! Who can’t get excited about soccer fights amongst international rivals? As usual, US vs Mexico was worth watching, even if we fell short, and I can’t wait for the next time I get to enjoy a game with friends on a weeknight and forget that it’s not a normal occurrence.

I am starting to get myself into the National team games. After the Yankee game ended yesterday, I was keeping myself busy with mobile updates on the bus ride home. Got home during the 76th minute (missed the fight), only to search for five minutes to find the game (I assumed it would be on ESPN2 or maybe even Fox Soccer - I think Simmons needs to come through with the Ocho at some point) and turn the game on about ten seconds before Sabah scored the eventual game-winner. That is the behavior of someone getting into it.

On a related note, MSG2 is now showing the Australian Football League Game of the Week every Saturday at 8 PM, which is exciting as shit considering there hasn’t been any regular footy available in the US in years. I have been staying home the last couple of Saturdays to watch this. I know that is lame. But footy is awesome.
